Bakery Student Reviews: An Intro to Street Photography
June 10, 2022

Bakery director Nick Gervin taught a 3 week introduction to street photography workshop in May at the Bakery! Students learned a new way to look at their urban environments and create images as cityscapes, street portraits and candid moments with an emphasis on depth, lighting and separation. Here’s a look at some of the work the students created and their thoughts on taking the course!

I would highly recommend taking Nick Gervin's The Art of Street Photography workshop. One of my biggest hurdles to date has been my introverted nature. Nick helped me to get out of my comfort zone. I found his tips and critiques very insightful and as a result, from this three week course, I have a number of photos of which I'm genuinely impressed I took myself. The amount of confidence that I built and carried out of this workshop is invaluable. I will be looking to take other workshops with Nick in the future, I feel he has a great deal to offer as an instructor.

I recently took Nick Gervin’s “The Art of Street Photography” workshop and highly recommend it. Although I am not a beginner photographer, this was the first formal photography class I have ever taken. Through photo assignments, class critiques, and general discussion, I gained new insights about how I can improve my images. Nick was a very effective teacher. I appreciated his commentary about our photos and especially valued his personal stories and experiences shooting the “street”. This workshop taught me that I don’t need to go to some exotic location to find interesting subjects to photograph. I am very motivated now to observe and document the cityscape and people of my community.
