This introductory course for black and white film photography is designed to provide participants with an understanding of 35mm (or medium format) photography and the foundations for darkroom usage. Topics covered include but are not limited to: camera operation (aperture, ISO, shutter speed, light meter interpretation), loading/unloading film, film processing, darkroom setup, RC printing, dodging and burning techniques, using filters, and print evaluation. darkroom exposure and development techniques to achieve skills and confidence in processing and printing your own work.
Through this experience you will understand the basics of darkroom printing and explore what makes a good print, as well as how to make those determinations for yourself.
Students can expect to gain confidence in operating a 35mm (or medium format) SLR camera, developing film, making contact sheets, selecting images, and generating high quality prints.
At the end of the course, you’ll have developed several rolls of your own film, created a handful of prints, and be fully capable of working independently in the darkroom to continue with your personal darkroom printing practice.
Materials, equipment, and Bakery access details:
All students will have access to chemistry and equipment at The Bakery for developing film and processing prints. 50 sheets of RC paper for contact sheets and prints are included in the course fee.
Students will need to bring:
6+ rolls of Ilford HP5
35mm (or medium format) analog SLR camera (check battery function before class)
Negative sleeves (35mm or medium format)
Students may wish to purchase:
Any additional paper for printing
Instructor Bio:
Andrew D. McClees is a photographer and bookmaker based in Portland, Maine. He runs the photo-publishing company wastelandbooks, and holds an MFA in Photography at Hartford Art School. Andrew has been a Core Member of the Bakery Photo Collective since 2022.
