Justin van Soest
I am a photographer who has been capturing images of architectural and landscape subjects since 1988. Working with both new development and restoration projects I have had the privilege of taking my camera into places where they are rarely allowed. I try to make simple compositions and create a certain sturdiness to my images, and hopefully offer a brief refuge from the mass visual devaluation in social media and the internet. Most of my work is shot on large (4x5) format film, although I love my digital SLR and iPhone. My work is best when it contains not only image fidelity and timing, but also an intangible human presence which is (I hope) worth the viewer’s time.
Justin Van Soest has been published in books, periodicals, and news outlets including the New York Times, New York Magazine, Metropolis, Architectural Record, Traditional Building, and his photographs have appeared on the websites of the world’s top brands including Toyota, Honda, GMC, Cadillac, JetBlue, Tommy Hilfiger, Tim Horton’s, and Neiman Marcus. He graduated from Cornell University in 1988, and now lives in Portland, Maine with his family.
